Learning Activity 3.5, Task 1: Where do I live?

According to the 2021 Census, Brampton, Ontario, has a population of approximately 656,480 residents. I live in Brampton, which is a very dense and popular city for people of all ethnicities. Brampton is known for its large Indian immigrant population as shown in the chart. The gender distribution has remained fairly equal with a slightly higher percentage of females. In 2021, Brampton's population was made up of 17.9% children aged 0-14, 23.4% youth age 15-29, 46.2% adults aged 30-64 and 12.5% seniors age 65+. (Profile Table, Census Profile, 2021 Census of Population - Brampton, City (CY) [Census Subdivision], Ontario, 2024)

Since Brampton is so dense in its Indian population its not surprising that most of my neighbours are Indian. I've learned a lot about their culture through family friends that live in the surrounding neighbourhood. I've noticed that as time has gone on since my family moved to Brampton 12 years ago that the population is just ever growing and so is the Indian population. It makes sense that we continue to grow in population since people view Brampton as a good place to immigrate to due to its proximity to Toronto, its cultural diversity and acceptance as well as more affordable housing compared to Toronto.

With that increase in population comes a rise in poverty, racism and division. I'm lucky to not have firsthand witnessed much poverty but I know that it does exist in Brampton, because it exists everywhere. People have to keep up with the rising cost of living in Brampton and for many its becoming unaffordable. With so many cultures its easy to get caught up in your own ethnic group and people unknowingly create their own forms of cultural segregation. Immigrants and family members coming to Brampton often face language barriers in a fully English (and French) environment. These immigrants are easier to be taken advantage of as they often are looking for a job and sometimes their previous credentials do not transfer over to our Canadian way of life. Bramptons transit and hospital are overloaded by the increase in demand with Brampton's increasing population this means that people have to wait much longer than expected and thankfully Brampton is beginning to work on a second hospital to meet its growing needs.
